Keller Independent School District

Parents should always have a role in their children’s education – make your voice heard!

The Keller Independent School District will hold a Board of Trustees election for places 1, 2, and 3 on May 7, 2022. Board Members are elected at-large to represent the entire community. Voters will be able to select one candidate from each Place, for a total of 3 selections per ballot.

CANDIDATES

Place 1

Micah Young is a father, small business owner, and Iraqi war combat veteran.

 

Young is a registered Republican and voted in several Republican primary elections. He has also made many financial contributions to Republicans and affiliated causes.

 

Young believes “we need to get politics out of the classroom,” and wants to see an increased focus on fundamentals. He also rejects Critical Race Theory.

 

Young says budget deficits are “unacceptable” and that the Board is responsible for ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent effectively and efficiently.

Allen is a father and has served with the Keller ISD Board of Trustees for 12 years. 

 

Allen is a registered Democrat and voted in the 2020 Democratic primary election. He has also made several donations to ActBlue, a fundraising platform for Democratic candidates, progressive organizations, and nonprofits. 

 

As recently as March 2021, Allen supported mask mandates in schools. 

 

Allen acknowledges that there were missteps in allowing age-inappropriate books to enter school libraries, but said he does not see “widespread neglect or other rampant maleficence.”  

 

Allen’s vision for the district includes “excellence, parental involvement, and fiscal responsibility.”

CANDIDATES

Place 2

Joni Shaw Smith is a mother and runs a fitness company and media production company with her husband.

 

Smith is a registered Republican and has voted in several Republican primary elections. 

 

Smith says her priorities include giving parents their voice back and ensuring politics are left out of the classroom.

 

Smith says “sexually-explicit instructional materials have no place in the classrooms or school libraries.” She is also critical of the Keller ISD Book Committee and its practice of requiring participating parents to sign NDA’s.

Julie Nors is a mother, substitute teacher, and has long served on various PTA councils.

 

Nors is a registered Republican and voted in several Republican primary elections. 

 

Nors does not support Critical Race Theory in Keller ISD and does not believe obscene content should be available in school libraries.

 

Nors promotes several ideas she would like to see implemented if elected, including smaller class sizes, early literacy activities, and increasing family engagement.

Davis is a mother and current member of the KISD Board.

 

Davis is a registered Republican and voted in Republican primary election in 2014 and 2010. 

 

Davis believes the biggest challenge facing the District are the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic for students’ education and emotional health.

CANDIDATES

Place 3

Sandi Walker is a mother of 6 and a community volunteer.

 

Walker is a registered Republican and has voted in several Republican primary elections.

 

Walker does not support the availability of books containing sexually explicit material at Keller ISD.

 

If elected, Walker wants to foster a “culture of transparency and parental involvement in schools.”

 

Walker has outlined 5 priorities for her campaign including increased parental involvement, addressing learning gaps, advocating for special education, and increasing student achievement through standing by teachers.

James Duncan is a retired probation officer and former Air Force Officer.

 

Duncan is a registered Democrat and has voted in Democratic and Republican primary elections.

 

Duncan says his top priority is ensuring KISD teacher are compensated in line with other districts. He says he would also like to see an increased focus on school security.
